The mean of the following numbers is 5:

7
6
5
4
3

So is the mean of these numbers:

9
9
8
6
4
2
1
1

Let me make one change. I’ll change the top score.

49
  9
  8
  6
  4
  2
  1
  1

Although the 9,9,8,6,4,2,1,1 string has a mean of 5, notice that by changing only one number the mean of the scores becomes 10. Means take into account the weight of every score. Think of them as being very democratic.
