Day 6: Learning
January 22, 2008 by Dr. Ken Tangen
Learning is a major area of study in psychology. It includes Pavlov’s dogs (classical conditioning), Skinner’s pigeons (operatnt conditioning) and Bandura’s clown (observational learning). In addition, there is conceptual, schematic, and motor learning.
Classical conditioning describes how we learn fears and phobias. When you feel anxious or nervous, think of Pavlov’s dogs. In contrast, operant conditioning shows how much influence rewards play in our lives. It also points out how limiting punishment is as a learning tool.
